The Otonabee Region Watershed covers an area of 1951 square kilometers and includes eight member municipalities. It contains the watersheds of three major rivers, The Otonabee River, The Indian River, and The Ouse River. It is located approximately 1.5 hours north east of Toronto and is part of the well known Kawartha Lakes area. It is a well known destination for its abundance of lakes, natural beauty, and outdoor recreation opportunities including camping, fishing and water sports. The population of the watershed is approximately 108,000 and includes the City of Peterborough, villages of Lakefield, Norwood, Millbrook, Hastings and several small settlements and hamlets. The Otonabee Region Watershed contains several physiographic regions and features including the Oak Ridges Moraine, Peterborough Drumlin Field, Canadian Shield and Kawartha Lakes making it a very diverse watershed.

The Otonabee Region Conservation Authority acted as the regional coordinator for the Canadian Community Monitoring Network Pilot Project. Using a combination of workshops, open houses, questionnaires, special events and local media promotion the project was launched in the community. As a result, Otonabee Conservation has been able to gather information about what is being monitored and by whom, and to act as a catalyst for local community based environmental monitoring initiatives.

The results of the pilot year include;

  • Over 60 community members signed up to participate in monitoring activities during 2003
  • Trent University, Fleming College and Peterborough Collegiate involved in monitoring air and water quality with Citizen’s Environment Watch
  • Inventory of existing monitoring programs in the Otonabee Region Watershed
  • Three open houses to promote community based monitoring activities and opportunities
  • Five workshops to promote environmental monitoring and education
  • Connecting volunteers with monitoring programs that need participants
  • Opportunities for students to gain volunteer experience
