Canadian Community Monitoring Network Bridge Funding Opportunities: Regional, Provincial & National Sources

Summary

This document presents research on over 200 funding opportunities for CCMN communities at both regional and national levels. It is important to note that this resource list was compiled specifically for the pilot communities involved in the establishment of the CCMN (2002-2003) and therefore excludes certain provinces and territories at this time. Please see EcoAction’s Green Source Guide for a wider range of opportunities. This list builds on the Green Source Guide to provide a more detailed breakdown of sources, eligibility criteria and application deadlines. (N.B. As application deadlines are subject to change, check with each source for annual deadlines).

Given the diverse nature of the activities and partners involved in the CCMN, funding could be sought from several angles, depending on the funding criteria. A multi-pronged approach is recommended (foundations, government, short-term, long-term, etc.). In addition to fundraising efforts at multiple scales (local, regional, national) proposals could target a range of themes:

Science   (monitoring, citizen science, climate change)
Community   (sustainability, empowerment, volunteerism, youth)
Schools   (NatureWatch links to curriculum, stewardship)
Environment   (habitat, biodiversity, stewardship, conservation)
Capacity Building   (new protocols, training, analysis, databases)
Products   (training videos, educational products, sustainability tools)
Multi-stakeholders   (industry, government, NGOs)
Landscape   (management, models, community engagement)
Research   (CBM models, science & social science studies)

Following the current CNF supporters listed in section 3.0, potential sources are listed for Regional Coordinators to pursue in partnership with schools, municipalities, universities, landowners and other groups. The sources listed in section 4.0 do NOT necessarily require applicants to hold registered charitable status, although eligibility details should be checked through the contact information provided. Often, funding is open to any non-profit or community group.

The sources listed here represent a starting point upon which to expand as additional funding sources become identified. Most sources included here are national in scope, however, section 5.0 does provide a preliminary list of provincial sources. Section 6.0 provides a list of potential corporate supporters. Many corporations choose to support the communities with which they are affiliated, thus Regional Coordinators are in the best position to assess additional possibilities for corporate partnership.

The final sections present selected foundations that were found to most closely match the goals of the CCMN, both nationally and locally. It is expected that further refinement will be necessary to establish the most targeted approach to foundation support. Since most foundations provide grants only to registered charities, it is anticipated that funding proposals will be presented either as a CNF initiative or through a coalition approach using the collective support of CCMN communities.

In summary, funding sources for Regional Coordinators to pursue are primarily listed in Sections 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0. Selected corporate sponsors and selected foundations for National fundraising efforts are listed in Sections 6.0 and 7.0, respectively, with additional funding sources listed in Section 8.0.
