Capacity building
The processes and strategies by which individuals, organizations, institutions and societies develop their abilities individually and collectively to perform functions, solve problems and achieve objectives.

Community Based Monitoring (CBM)
A process where concerned citizens, government agencies, industry, academia, community groups and local institutions collaborate to monitor, track, and respond to issues of common community concern.

Community Mapping/ Reconnaissance
A survey of the groups, government agencies, networks etc. in place within the community that have a role or influence on environmental planning, management, assessment, monitoring and reporting.

Governance Analysis
A way to confirm information on existing groups and their role in the community (who does what), how the community “works” and who are the main “players”, especially with respect to monitoring, land use and planning.

Protocol
A defined method or set of procedures.

Social capital
The combination of skill sets, shared values, respect and trust within a community of people that allow for cooperation for mutual benefit.

Stakeholder
Anybody who feels that his/her interests will be affected by the outcome of a decision making process.
